Meet Penny!
Starting this year 2014, we have Despoina-Penny Demertzi (you can simply call her Penny) in our residency program. Penny will use our space as a studio for her artistic research and production. The studio is open during her stay, so feel free to come to visit her. Penny would love to share her research. Here is a short synopsis about her:
Despoina- Penny Demertzi is an artist/researcher who was born in Athens, Greece in 1980. From 1985 – 96 she studied Folk Dance (at the cultural department of the municipality of Alexandroupolis, Greece). She studied Archaeology, History and History of Art (specialization Archaeology) at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Philosophy, Greece and after the completion of her BA she attended the educational program for “Diploma in Translation” of The Institute of Linguists of London at “Metaphrasis”, Thessaloniki, Greece. She continued her studies by attending under the Prof. Klaas Hoek, and Tiong Ang the MA program in Fine Arts at MaHKU, Utrecht Graduate School of Visual Art and Design, Department of Fine Arts, Utrecht, The Netherlands She graduated in 2010 with Level A Distinction and Research-Thesis-Project (artistic-academic) entitled Art Gallery: Museology Street / METAPOLIS. She has engaged to Fine Art Photography via ongoing workshops given by the Photographer Stratos Kalafatis, Studio Tessera, Thessaloniki, Greece and she is interested in Street and Performative photography social applied. Since 2009 she has been running the project “The Garden of Euphoria”, an ongoing, audiovisual, activist project which synaesthetically translates and communicates the social need/demand for sexual education via proposed exhibitions /artistic research/street actions.
Despoina-Penny Demertzi currently lives in Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia and participates in the residency program of Ruang MES 56.
