Rosa Verhoeve has been awarded “de Zilveren Camera” (The Silver Camera) with her series “Salto Vitale” in 2005, category “Art, Culture, Architecture and Technique”. Salto Vitale portrays the life and works of young acrobats of Ethiopian youth circuses. For about two years Rosa traveled intensively with the circuses through remote rural parts of Ethiopia. As a photographer, Rosa is known for her long-term projects, which she follows with personal dedication and tenacity.
Recently Rosa has been working in South-Sudan, on an assignment for Medecins sans Frontières (MSF Holland). In the very remote Jonglei region, greatly affected by violent tribal clan clashes, she photographed the TB clinic in a small field MSF hospital and portrayed the daily life of its patients.
Currently, Rosa is working on a long-term project called Kopi Susu (Coffee with Milk) about her mixed origin: she is the daughter of an Indonesian mother and a Dutch father. With Kopi Susu she wants to express her personal view on her mother’s native country. It can be considered as a view on present day Indonesia, but with her family history in the former colonial times in mind. The project is not meant to be a search for her Indo-European roots. Rather it is a poetic encounter in images of her own relationship with a country in which her family history is deeply embedded.
Rosa is represented by Laif photo agency, Cologne, Germany and Hollandse Hoogte, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
This presentation was held in cooperation with KUNCI Cultural Studies Center.
