From 6th to 20th of March 2009 The One Minutes, in collaboration with Ruang MES 56 and Video Battle held The City Oneminutes video workshop about the city of Yogyakarta in exactly 1 minute duration, facilitated by Olivia Glebbeek and Evelien Krijl. The workshop was joined in by 11 participants (with 34 videos in total): Agung Nugroho Widhi, Anang Saptoto, Angki Purbandono, Edwin Dolly Roseno, Daniel Satyagraha, Deon Manunggal, Jim Allen Abel, Noval Akbar, Aderi Putra Wicaksono, Siska Rahardiyanti a.k.a Cyka and Wok The Rock. About The One Minutes
The One Minutes were launched in 1998 and by now it has developed into a global network with makers from 100 countries and an archive of 10000 video works that are shown (inter) nationally on many podia. Its core activity is the annual competition for the best One Minutes. Additionally The One Minutes realizes television programs, exhibitions, DVD-releases, lectures, workshops, internet TV and websites. The One Minutes foundation manages a wealth of images, facilities, contacts and experiences and would like to share this with third parties.

The One Minutes contribute to a rich and divers picture of the world. It provides conditions for creating new artworks and offers an international platform and a broad audience to artists around the world.

About The City Oneminutes
Making a portrait of a city is to record the unique. To register the characteristics with which this city distinguishes itself from others. It is also the city seen through the eyes of the artist.
The exhibition will be a walk through the world of cities. An insight into where and how people live. A visual report of the now.
The exhibition is to be seen on www.cityoneminutes.org, the digital TV channel Holland DOC / VPRO and the World Expo in Shanghai 2010.

It’s not easy to understand Chairil Anwar‘s poems. In this workshop, we didn’t find its ease, but we tried to more conceive or grasp his poems in order to create some visual illustrations through photography and looked for any possibilities to explore its medium.

There were no “truth” that we seek from the sentence of his poems. We just tried to match or combine his text with the situation and (or) experiences that we had in our daily life. There are many words and sentences from his poems that we couldn’t completely understand. Like this one for example.

“Mirat Muda, Chairil Muda”

Dialah, Miratlah, ketika mereka merebah,
Menatap lama ke dalam pandangnya coba memisah matanya menantang
yang satu tajam dan jujur yang sebelah.

Mirat raba urut Chairil, raba dada.
Dan tahulah dia kini, bisa katakan dan tunjukkan dengan pasti di mana menghidup jiwa, menghembus nyawa.
Liang jiwa-nyawa saling berganti.

Dia rapatkan dirinya pada Chairil makin sehati; hilang secepuh segan, hilang secepuh cemas.
Hiduplah Mirat dan Chairil deras, menuntut tinggi tidak setapak berjarak dengan mati.

What a strange romantic poems…

These 29 works from the boys and girls of FOTKOM 401 try to open up Chairil’s poems with many methods of technique, approach and interpretation to make it into photography illustrations. “Mirat Muda, Chairil Muda” was succesfully interpreted by Noval and Pungky into an animation with long exposure technique. While in the other side, one of Chairil’s poems “Hampa” was constructed with the idea of anti-gravity by Fauziah Ayu Rahmawati, which makes a kind of astonishing photographic illusion.

Besides animation technique, there are some other works with different execution and presentation. Like installation, digital imaging and many other ways. Maybe as their devotion and love to Chairil Anwar, or their love to love itself. Well, maybe you and somebody else have to prove it…

On November 4 – 15, 2008, the Student Activity Unit of STIE YKPN Yogyakarta, or known as STIEHUNT held an exhibition of the result of collage art workshop. It was an exhibition of 34 works of the students collaborating with Angki Purbandono (Ruang MES 56). Entitled MAKE UP, this was the result of image therapy using collage technique – cutting and pasting of advertisings pages taken from magazines, then it was being scanned to make it into digital data, and afterward the data was being printed into any kind of mediums and sizes. By doing a re-make up, hopefully the left and right brain will be refreshed thus creating a spontaneous creative art thinking.

A collage (From the French: coller, to glue) is a work of formal art, primarily in the visual arts, made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. Use of this technique made its dramatic appearance among oil paintings in the early 20th century as an art form of groundbreaking novelty.

An artistic collage work may include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, portions of other artwork, photographs, and such, glued to a piece of paper or canvas.

Techniques of collage were first used at the time of the invention of paper in China around 200 BC. The use of collage, however, remained very limited until the 10th century in Japan, when calligraphers began to apply glued paper, using texts on surfaces, when writing their poems.

The technique of collage appeared in medieval Europe during the 13th century. Gold leaf panels started to be applied in Gothic cathedrals around the 15th and 16th centuries. Gemstones and other precious metals were applied to religious images, icons, and also, to coats of arms.

In the 19th century, collage methods also were used among hobbyists for memorabilia (i.e. applied to photo albums) and books (i.e. Hans Christian Andersen, Carl Spitzweg).

Lately, collage work done on paper or magazine is getting rare because nowadays the technique can be done easily on a computer without having to go through the real cut-and-paste ritual, we just need a computer mouse. (from Wikipedia)

It is not easy to pull a red line among the 34 collage works created by STIEHUNT. There was no similarity in the content, no exact deal on how to communicate, and moreover on what the message was. But that was actually the appealing point of these works; the freedom of viewing the image and later combining it with other image until it created a new form with a new meaning. That was the freedom they obtained in this workshop; not just on the freedom of the technique, but also on the way of the thinking!

The exhibition was opened by the Director of STIE YKPN Yogyakarta Dr. Dody Hapsoro, MSPA., MBA., Ak., and live performance of Frau at V Art Gallery Café Jalan Laksda Adisucipto 165 Yogyakarta on Monday, November 3, 2008. This exhibition was continued with an Artist Talk on November 14, 2008 on “Collage Without Concept” by Angki Purbandono (Ruang MES 56) and Grace Samboh.

OK Video Militia workshop in Jogjakarta took place due to a collaboration between Ruangrupa and Ruang MES 56 community. The community consists of several young artists focusing on the medium of photography. Several members of the Ruang MES 56 also distribute video and short film works in a compilation entitled Video Battle. Fourteen participants, consisting of video artists, photographers, painters, and art students, took part in the workshop.

The majority of works produced in the workshop are works using the medium of photography as the “recorder of actions”-such works are often called ‘video performance’. Within a week, participants produced fifteen video works, i.e. What Are U Fighting?; The Toy Guns City; To Drunk To Dance; Awul-Awul; Is It Save?; Parking Men Terror!; What Goes Without Saying; Why???; Neon Lights; Baik dan Buruk; Mungkin Ajah; Siesta; Melihat dari Atas dan Melihat dari Bawah; Patient; and Alkid.

This exhibition is a part of the fourth Art Project which took place at Ruang MES 56 since its establishment in 2002. One of the developments of the program is to combine photography concept with another fields of experience, and to give a chance to popularize a fresher way of photography reading.

Cover Boy Art Project is initiated from the thought over public’s hanging-out habit; putting together the daily life with its varied patterns of occurrence and hot gossip spread around.

Photography and Video Participatory Workshop for Bantul Children
October – November 2006
Exhibition: January 21, 2007 at Imogiri Subdistrict Office

A documentation activity with photography medium, done by the children around the earthquake disaster location in Kabupaten (an administrative area below the province) Bantul. While strolling around with cameras in their hands, they took pictures of their own house ruins, and told about their experience which related to the object they captured. By doing so, they could transform their memories and experiences about something into a photo and stimulate the instinct of history recording or photo documentation since childhood.

Video workshop, Rukun Warga (administrative unit at the next-to-lowest level in city) Nagan photography documentation collection of 17th August celebration exhibition, and video screening of a workshop’s project entitled Pura-Pura Ninja, which was held by Ruang MES 56 cooperated with Pena (Pemuda Nagan (Nagan youngsters) and FourColours Film in order to commemorate the Republic of Indonesia Independence. In addition, Shaggydog’s acoustic performance enlivened this event.

As historical fact, Indonesian Independence Proclamation on August 17, 1945 was surrounded by full of myths. The country has an important role in this case, especially in how the society sees and remembers that event. Every year the society welcomes and celebrates this event with various kinds of activities, such as holding many kinds of competitions, art performance show, and tirakatan (a night time event to express thanks to God by inviting neighbors to other neighbor’s house to pray and have some meals that have already been prepared together). Then, what is the role of photography in taking part in the society in order to remembering and celebrating this event?

Because of its existence in (common) society as a tool for taking pictures of events, which are considered as the momentous one and want to be always remembered, photography has an important role in every August 17 celebration committee in the middle of the society. In this case, it is in the small region level, which is Rukun Warga (administrative unit at the next-to-lowest level in city). A village or kampong participation in celebrating the Independence Day will be taken into notice if we see its documentation from every event or from the independence day ritual; we could see how the villagers, year after year, clean up and decorate their village or kampong, how the kids join in many kinds of competition happily and show their talent in dancing or singing in the art performance show and so on.

Besides inviting the people of Nagan Lor to celebrate the Independence Day in a nostalgic atmosphere, Ruang MES 56 as non-profit organization which is very concern in the world of photography, and as the new member of Nagan Lor, also held Independence Day photos exhibition and photo competition. Those were expected to tighten up the ties of friendship and act as a place for stimulating creativity and fostering the history importance awareness; that history is not always be such a big thing but can also be just a simple thing.

Ruang MES 56 held a workshop on photogram printing technique in cooperation with Insomnium in Malang city. The tutors were Gunawan Edi Nugroho and Eko Bhirowo. This workshop was open for public.

March 7 – 31, 2005

Absolut Fotogram was the first workshop done by Ruang MES 56. It was a workshop on one of photography technique which is executed in a dark room without using any camera; the participants were 14 students, 36 college students, and 14 members of public. Technically, they were classified into different categories; every category had a chance to introduce the subject matter both theoretically and practically for one week. Ruang MES 56 invited Gunawan Edi Nugroho as the tutor for this workshop; he was one of Indonesian Art Institute Yogyakarta graduates. He was majoring in Photography and wrote about photogram as his thesis.

This workshop was Victoria Cattoni’s project during in Indonesia. She also did this in Bali, Yogyakarta and Semarang.
Victoria asked the respondents to wear kebaya (Javanese traditional woman’s long sleeved blouse usually worn with sarong) that was already prepared and told their experience about it.
