This workshop was Victoria Cattoni’s project during in Indonesia. She also did this in Bali, Yogyakarta and Semarang.
Victoria asked the respondents to wear kebaya (Javanese traditional woman’s long sleeved blouse usually worn with sarong) that was already prepared and told their experience about it.

To attract conditional perspective to visual dimension, photography is one of practical tool and becomes usual thing to do by people when they’re doing some activities or taking a trip. In this matter, there are many factors involved until someone makes up his mind to record the situation or his visual memory into pictures. In this context, one’s perception is surely formed based on time and psychology which splits factual awareness to visual relation that moves sinergically, even contradictorily and sporadically.

Coming from attraction, surprise, exploration which related to attention, will relate reality and reflection. Then what do we hope after the objects become images? Do the factor of time, situation and energy still matter? Or just stop as dead pictures, as memory documents? Similar to this representation of visual photography. From various places, perspectives of daily life signs, from small, simple, and personal things to forms of things which earn thinking function and process in the community and surrounding system, reduced back to two dimensional, voiceless and scentless medium. In the development of photography, it is a metamorphosis which is able to change context into text, factual to illusion. From here we tried to interact with equal perception.

Achtung! Beware or watch out. This word is often used as an exclamation word or information. Because the context of these photos taken in Germany , Achtung! Become a part of which was hopefully make the interaction between audience and the pictures situation easy to get. This exhibition was visual representation of found objects that spontaneously came whenever and wherever. [Setu Legi]

From 1975 – 1978, Valentijn Van Dijk was named Tino Djumini. When he was three years old, he was adopted by Dutch family who knew him from a photo written “nice boy” at its back. Then, he did not only alter his name to Valentijn Van Dijk but also he had new parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. The thing that he never knew before, now he used to eat with knife and fork, the smell of milk, and speak in Dutch. Was his past as an Indonesian gone?

The question about who his real mother and where his home was had brought him back to Indonesia. His first ride to his homeland had become the turning point of his life and become his inspiration to creating a project called ‘Nice Boy’.

In his searching of his birth mother, he found some customs, which were very different with his life in Dutch, like ‘marriage’ and ‘brotherhood’. Valentijn’s (Tino) work touched every social classes, especially in general context it could give the new sense of ‘identity’.

Through FAÇADE, Yudhi Soerjoatmodjo presented a new way of ‘seeing’ concept. The photos were taken from 9 cities in Germany which physically looked like a documentation form of ‘what it’s seen’. However, behind those things, he offered an observation of the hidden daily faces, nameless buildings and the ordinary scenery mean. Those pictures were such an invitation for us to find the physical, psychological, and spiritual dimension of what it is implied in FAÇADE.

Ruang Mes 56 invited who ever to dig up their “delinquency” potentials that might be in private room so far, with the assumption that we could easily get (life between) imagination wandering around. Using Adobe Photoshop and even without taking pictures, we re-used picture that we stole to be `cut and paste` to be a new form of artwork.

Kasan is a student of Faculty of Veterinary, Gadjah Mada University, who has photography as a hobby and is very active in it. His interest in photography pushed him to experiment by joining the art of medical science with photography and gives an information about his research in medical science as well.

Roberto Alcaraz

Roberto Alcaraz is a photographer from Alicante, Spain, who traveled around to Yugoslavia with his friend in 2001. He, however, found one different reality from news spread in Spain, which gives homogeneous opinion (referred to CNN release). In his trip, he found an intimate society in new chapter of life, the birth of new nation and the exhausted people of long-winded war.

From them, he learned that love and respect would change their condition, that one little step could bring a big change. They are people who held love and modesty to the face of strange and unfriendly world; their fight is ours too. Roberto’s picture told about streets, houses, walls and daily life fragments. A story from a city, that became arena of witness and horror. The walls, which expressed great birth passing silence in anxieties.

By his photos, he wanted to show a form of eternity of a city and its people by taking the traditional aspects as priority. Roberto talked to us by his pictures about something forgotten by the mass media, and those photos will tell us about their own stories themselves.

This is the media to compare conflicts happened in Balkan and lasting (never ending) ones in Indonesia, such as in Ambon and Aceh.
